The first graders have become great authors! They are enjoying writing "choice" pieces during our daily literacy centers. Every day, students can be found by our writing center stapling pieces of paper together to create books. Pokemon is a popular topic lately! Some are even taking these pages home to work on their stories more. We have had a few friends who have completed work and have asked to share it with the class! The students really enjoy this experience. We enjoyed hearing books from both Luke and George. They were both great stories and George's story was so silly that it had us all laughing! If your child is working on some writing at home, encourage him/her to complete it and bring it to school to share with our class.
We spent some time exploring patterns during math centers last week. The students rotated to centers and worked on making patterns using different manipulatives such as popsicle sticks, unifix cubes, pattern blocks and the Seesaw app. They did a great job and had a lot of fun while learning! We even had one group make a red, white and blue pattern for the Cubs! The firsties were encouraged to try to make more challenging and complex patterns. Each student drew a pattern using the Seesaw app and recorded their thinking about their patterns. These are uploaded onto their individual Seesaw pages. Check them out if you haven't already!
Our first grade scientists spent some quality time exploring leaves this past week. We started our learning by sharing what we already know about leaves and brainstorming questions of things we wonder about leaves. Then we sorted huge piles of leaves into different categories. It was up to our table groups to work together to decide how to sort their leaves. After we sorted them one way (most were sorted by color) we were encouraged to try to sort them by a different attribute such as size or shape. Below are some pictures of our sorts. We also asked each group to share what they did with their leaves and recorded their responses. Finally, each child chose a leaf to look at more closely. We used magnifying glasses to study our leaf up close. We drew the front and back of our leaves in our science notebook and wrote a few notes about our observations.
Thank you to our room moms, Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Ophus for planning a great Halloween party! We had a fun, smooth party with help from Mrs. Doering, Mrs. Kinzie, Mrs. Mazurowski, Mrs. Kowitz and Mrs. Selleck. Thank you for leading such great stations! Check out our pictures below. |
