We spent some time during this past week engaging in macro and micro observations of the Patton field. Ask your child to tell you about some organisms that they found in these environments. See if they can tell you how that organism may have found food and shelter in that habitat.

We spent some time honoring Mrs. Ryl on her last Administrative Assistant's Day. We wrote her a book and shared it with her when she came for a classroom visit.
We had such an exciting week last week with our chicks hatching! What a great experience for the kids. We had 9 chicks hatch and all students were able to hold one if they wanted to. The looks on some of their faces are priceless! Our chicks will be delivered to Friendship Park Conservatory tomorrow and then a farmer will pick them up from there. Take a look at some of moments with the chicks!
The second graders are super excited to meet our baby chicks! We are preparing for them to hatch close to the 24th of April. Each student got to number and place an egg in the incubator. We also took some time last week to "candle" our eggs to get a look at what is happening inside. They are super excited. Thank you to Mrs. Sturgeon who has a good deal of experience with this and who has been a great help!
We just finished up our second week of studying poetry. The kids are really enjoying how poetry can make us feel so many different emotions. We learned that poets choose their words very carefully so that their readers will get a detailed picture in their mind and feel a certain emotion or mood. Looking at how poets use white space, stanzas, long/short lines, punctuation and strong words has helped us to better understand the poems that we have read. Below are some pictures of the kids working with a partner to determine the meaning of some unknown words in a poem about a rocking chair. They did a great job!
The second graders were soooo excited to dissect owl pellets today! They learned about how owl pellets are formed and then all our scientists worked hard with a partner to dissect a pellet. We found all sorts of great bones! Ask your child to tell you about it. Some of the goodies we found may be coming home in a ziploc bag tomorrow. :)
