Our first grade scientists spent some quality time exploring leaves this past week. We started our learning by sharing what we already know about leaves and brainstorming questions of things we wonder about leaves. Then we sorted huge piles of leaves into different categories. It was up to our table groups to work together to decide how to sort their leaves. After we sorted them one way (most were sorted by color) we were encouraged to try to sort them by a different attribute such as size or shape. Below are some pictures of our sorts. We also asked each group to share what they did with their leaves and recorded their responses. Finally, each child chose a leaf to look at more closely. We used magnifying glasses to study our leaf up close. We drew the front and back of our leaves in our science notebook and wrote a few notes about our observations.
