Room 112 Mathematicians enjoyed using their imaginations while creating and discovering during our Exploration Stations!

On Wednesday, Patton Firsties enjoyed a reward for our 3rd Place win for "Pennies for Patients"! We celebrated with pasta, salad and bread sticks from Olive Garden. It was DELICIOUS! A special thanks to Evie's mom for supplying water and Catherine's mom for taking pictures (which will be featured in the yearbook!).
Room 112 Firsties have been exploring measuring this week. We read the story, How Big Is A Foot? by Rolf Myller. This is a story about a King who wanted to build the Queen a bed for her birthday because they have yet to be invented. They tiny apprentice made the bed to the King's specifications (3 feet by 6 feet), but it was too small because the Apprentice's foot was not as large as the King's foot! Room 112 Mathematicians measured different objects around the room using feet, digits, hand spans, cubits, and arm spans! We found out that this was not a good measuring system because everyone is unique and not all the same size! Room 112 Firsties can now be considered First Class Travelers! Over the last 2 weeks we have visited India, Israel, Africa and Sweden. We have been learning about many holiday traditions around the world! Here is a picture of our Firsties, at the airport, holding their passports. They would fly Patton Airlines to a country and when they landed they were greeted by customs. The customs agent welcomed the travelers to the country and handed them a stamp to be placed in their passports. Once we landed, we found the country (or continent) on the map, read a book about the holiday, and filled out our "Holidays Around the World" booklet. We also made crafts or played games to go along with each new holiday. Next week, we will continue to Mexico and then finally back to USA! Once our travels are complete, we will have explored Diwali (India), Hanukkah (Israel), Kwanzaa (Africa), St. Lucia's Day (Sweden), Las Posadas (Mexico), and Christmas (United States). All of these holidays have candles and family in common! We began our new Social Studies unit, "Holidays Around the World"! We started by talking about important vocabulary words such as wants vs. needs, traditions, celebrations and culture. To help deepen our understanding of the word culture, we read the book, The Sandwich Swap. This story is about two best friends, Lily and Salma, who like each other very much but tend to eat very different things. Salma is disgusted by the sight of Lily's peanut butter and jelly sandwich and Lily is repulsed by Salma's hummus on pita. The food differences turn into a huge argument and pretty soon the whole school is involved. It ends with the two girls trying each other's sandwiches and enjoying it very much. This gave the two girls and idea... They'd have a sandwich swap party where everyone brings in their favorite food. I love this illustration from the last page. You can see the buffet table with different foods and flags from the country the foods represent! The Sandwich Swap showed the kids the importance of learning about each other and their cultures. It is such a great message!
