As part of our non-fiction unit, the firsties are learning about different text structures used in non-fiction texts. One of the structures that we learned about was compare and contrast. We read a non-fiction text about living and non-living things and then worked as a large group to complete a Venn Diagram comparing the two. The following day, the firsties worked with a partner to read a non-fiction piece on frogs and toads. They then worked together to compare them using a Venn Diagram. We also spent time reading articles on summer and winter following the same pattern. The students did a fantastic job working together and completing their diagrams. We glued these in our reading notebooks for future reference.
The students did a scavenger hunt to look for non-fiction text features in books. We learned that many non-fiction texts have only one feature while others include them all!! Some of the features that we looked for were headings, photographs, bold print, glossary, index and table of contents. Ask your child to point out a few of these when reading non-fiction books. In science, we started a new unit on weather. Room 112 Meteorologists have been researching about "Wild Weather". Six teams are researching thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, blizzards, and ice, hail and sleet. Next week, they will get a chance to show their knowledge while reporting their findings in front of a green screen using the Do!nk app. These videos will be posted on the blog as well as their SeeSaw blog.
