The entire first grade worked on learning about the important contributions of Martin Luther King Jr. We read stories, watched the movie "My Friend Martin" and created art projects to display in the hallway. It is always heartwarming to see how young kids respond to the injustices that were common during Dr. King's time. They were incredibly engaged in our studies and had many questions. We created portraits of Dr. King to display in the hallway along with projects from the other first grade classrooms. Ask your child what he/she remembers about Martin Luther King Jr.

We are finishing up Unit 4 in math. Part of this unit involved exploring measurement. We looked at nonstandard versus standard measuring tools. The first graders loved using the little measuring tapes to measure different parts of their bodies. See if your child can help you measure things at home by both inches and centimeters. Our unit 4 math test will be some time next week!
Last week we began our science unit on Light and Sound. This unit begins with exploring sound. We talked about how sounds are made, all sounds come from vibrations. We used several different materials to try to make vibrations and sounds. Then we learned that sound travels through air while making "pepper dance." Our partner groups recorded their experiment making pepper dance on their Seesaw page. They recorded a video and shared their thinking about the experiment. Check them out! Know that only one partner talked on the video but it took both partners to complete the experiment and recording.
We have worked hard during math to learn what makes 10. We have also used ten frames to quickly identify ten plus more. The kids loved playing this dice game during guided math to help us practice our number automaticity and facts!
The firsties recently learned that a noun is a person, place or thing. After learning the definition of a noun, we did a scavenger hunt around the school. We looked for different items and recorded them under the correct column (person, place or thing) on our paper. We had a lot of fun trying to think of things that nobody else would think of. See if your first grader remembers what a noun is!
We celebrated the holidays with a little "Polar Express" activity with our 3rd grade buddies. We read the book and brainstormed ways to get to the North Pole. Then we wrote the steps on how we would get there and drew a map to go with our writing. Finally, the firsties and their buddies shared their work with the whole group. It was fabulous to see how much fun they had working together!
