Scientists in Room 112 continue to study Living Things. Together, we created an animal and plant collage. After, we had an excellent discussion on how these two things are alike and different! Ask your Firstie how they are alike and how they are different!
We began to learn about writing autobiographies this week! The students learned that an autobiography is a book that the authors write all about themselves. We talked about what details you would want to tell people about your life. We have worked on writing a "Me" page, a "Family" page and a "Friend" page. We will finish up our autobiographies with a "Favorites" page and will then create a cover using the pic collage app (pictures to come!). At the end of our unit we will take time to share our autobiographies with our classmates. Here are some pictures of our writers hard at work!
While engaging in reading workshop, students will often record the important work that they are doing in their reader's notebooks. One of the activities that we did was to draw and label the parts of the book. The kids loved using their book from independent reading time to respond in their notebooks!
We have been working hard to build up our stamina for reading independently. We are currently reading for about 10-15 minutes independently each day. Some of our goals during this time are to stay in one spot, keep our eyes on the book, find a good place to read and read the whole time! This can be very hard at the beginning of the year but our firsties have been up to the challenge. Next week we will begin our "shopping" for books routines.
The firsties have amazed me with how quickly they have picked up on our morning routines. After identifying their lunch choice, checking their folder and putting away their backpack, the students head to their desk and take out their "Rise & Shine" Binder. This binder has dry erase pages that help to practice basic skills such as days of the week, months of the year, number recognition, tally marks, tens frames, sight words and more! They quickly get to work and have enjoyed using their binders! Some binder pages will change throughout the year as our skills progress.
The firsties reviewed letters and sounds while creating a class book "Aa My Name is…" Each child worked with the first letter in their name. They brainstormed things that started with that letter and then wrote and illustrated their book page!
Our first home project involving math went home in your Firsties take home folder today (Friday)! This math project will be due Thursday, September 24th.
The scientists of Room 112 have been busy at work this week! At the begining of the week, we discovered Mystery Substance A were brine shrimp. Friday, we observed our new friends, the crickets! Here are a few pictures with our scientists at work!
