We just finished up our second week of studying poetry. The kids are really enjoying how poetry can make us feel so many different emotions. We learned that poets choose their words very carefully so that their readers will get a detailed picture in their mind and feel a certain emotion or mood. Looking at how poets use white space, stanzas, long/short lines, punctuation and strong words has helped us to better understand the poems that we have read. Below are some pictures of the kids working with a partner to determine the meaning of some unknown words in a poem about a rocking chair. They did a great job!
