We spent some time in reading this week focusing on building good habits while reading independently. We talked about how to read longer texts, stopping to take breaks and "check for understanding." They loved reading the legend of the Giant Fish! We also talked about using clues in a text to determine the author's main idea. We read several of our Time for Kids magazines using clues such as the title, repeated words and illustrations to determine the key idea. They did a great job with this! This week we also wrapped up our beginning of the year benchmarking assessments. During this process, I read individually with each student to assess his/her current levels and needs. I am looking forward to starting guided reading groups and one-on-one conferences in the coming weeks. We continue to do a fabulous job during our independent reading time.
Our word work study this week focused on identifying and sorting short and long vowel sounds, and making and reading words that follow these patterns. We talked about how each vowel can make two different sounds and identified words with both long and short vowel sounds. The kids then played a long vowel/short vowel concentration game with a partner. We are working to upload an example to our Seesaw pages.
We are continuing to work on our autobiography during Writer's Workshop. This week we focused on a paragraph about our school. The students are learning to organize a paragraph with a topic sentence, details and examples to support their topic sentence and then a conclusion sentence to "wrap it all up." Next week we will write about our favorite things!
