We finished publishing our nonfiction books this past week! The second graders worked so hard on gathering facts, writing paragraphs and editing with a partner to complete a final draft! After each chapter we met with our partner to receive feedback and edit. We then worked on the final draft and printed or drew pictures to go with our facts from that chapter. All of our books included important text features such as a table of contents and a glossary with key words. Some books included diagrams or maps as well. We worked very hard on our books and they will be displayed at conferences for your reading enjoyment!

After learning all about landforms and bodies of water, we studied several different models including globes and maps. The students then showed their understanding of models, maps, landforms and bodies of water by creating their own maps. They had to pretend that they had discovered a new land. Their map needed to include: a title, four landforms, three bodies of water, symbols and a legend. The kids have worked very hard on their maps and they can't wait to show them off. We had some creative new lands!
We worked with a partner in Mrs. McLoone's class to create a model of a landform and body of water. We made a plan, gathered materials and worked together to create our models. We then took pictures of our models and explained them using the Seesaw app. If you haven't had a chance yet, check it out on your child's Seesaw account.
We started a new unit in Science that focuses on Land, Wind and Water. Mrs. Corley came in to help us kick off this unit with a Nearpod activity on the Ipads. The kids were able to take a virtual fieldtrip to see several different landforms. We identified what we noticed, shared our thinking and recorded some ideas in the app. The students then worked to draw and label these different landforms in their science notebooks. Next week our lessons will focus on bodies of water!
The second graders have been learning about synonyms and antonyms. We have engaged in classroom activities, played games that are available at word study center and completed an assessment to see our progress! We all have a pretty solid understanding of both synonyms and antonyms.
Thank you to our room moms, Mrs. Musolf and Mrs. Montesano, for planning a great Valentine's Day party. Thank you also to the many moms who volunteered to help run our different stations: Mrs. Bailey, Mrs. Trakas, Mrs. Fritz, Mrs. Mier and Mrs. Walsh. Lots of smiles and giggles and we couldn't have done it without you! We have continued work in our nonfiction writing unit during the last several weeks. We spent this week thinking of a new topic to write about and creating a table of contents with our audience in mind. Then we spent some time researching and taking notes about our topic. We will spend more time writing and researching over the next few weeks. Then each student will pick one of their nonfiction books to take through the editing process. They are learning a lot and are eager to work on their writing each day!
The kids did a great job sharing all their learning about government while creating an Ipad project. Mrs. Corley came in to teach the class how to use the new app that helped them create their Government projects. They listened, followed directions and recorded their notes beautifully. These projects were shared via Seesaw! Be sure to check them out.
We have been reading many nonfiction articles to practice our comprehension skills. We read an article about the "Queen of the Waves," the first woman to swim across the English Channel. We worked with a partner to read the article and highlight words that told facts versus words that showed descriptive language. The kids did a great job working together, sharing their ideas and listening to their partner's ideas.
