The fiction unit, from our Reading Workshop Curriculum, is coming to a close this week. One of the things that we learned during this unit is that many author's write tales that teach us a message. We learned about themes of perserverance, friendship, courage and so much more. Today each child was asked to draw a picture of one of the books from our unit and to explain the author's message. The firsties worked really hard on their Author's Message papers and I was impressed with their thinking! These will be put into our Reading Response notebooks.
We had fun using part of our reading time this week to explore big books with a partner! Big books were placed strategically around the room so that we could spread out and enjoy a new way to practice reading. When we were finished at one book we could look for an open book and go there. We loved reading with a friend!
The firsties have been practicing the skill of retelling a familiar tale. This past week we used our "tell me tower" to retell the story of The Three Ninja Pigs, a twist on the traditional tale of The Three Little Pigs. The tower shows pictures of important parts of the story that the students need to remember while retelling. For example, character, setting, problem and solution. We practiced remembering these key components as a class and then we paired up and practiced with a partner. See if your child can retell you one of the traditional tales from our fiction unit.
